The boat
Bigger isn't always better out here. This 2017 Mako Pro Skiff 17 CC drafts under a foot of water, so it gets into the sandbars and skinny flats that deep-hull boats can't touch. Perfect for a couple or small group wanting a personal day on the water, whether that's sandbar hopping or chasing fish on the flats.
Where we can go: Flats, backwater, and shallow sandbar water all around the area, including Passage Key, Jewfish Key, and Beer Can Island. For the more adventurous, Egmont Key is also reachable.
Fishing: This is a true flats boat, built for sight fishing in shallow water. The grass flats and mangrove edges around Anna Maria and lower Tampa Bay hold snook, redfish, and speckled trout year-round, with tarpon rolling through in late spring and summer. The open layout gives you room to cast from bow to stern.
Bring your own gear. Anglers 16 and older need a valid Florida saltwater fishing license.
Suggested itinerary: Cruise out to Beer Can Island or Jewfish Key to anchor up, swim, and hang out on the sandbar, then hop over to Passage Key for a quieter stretch of shallow water and wildlife viewing. Want to fish? Start early on the flats while the water's calm, then finish the day on the sandbar. Feeling adventurous? Egmont Key makes for a longer day trip with historic fort ruins to explore.
Good to know: This is an open skiff with no bathroom or full shade, so it's best suited for half-day trips rather than an all-day outing. But there a location near Jewfish you can dock and use restroom.
Capacity: Up to 6 passengers. For comfort, we recommend no more than 4 adults, which leaves room to move around, fish, and stretch out.
What's included: [coolers, safety gear]
Extra costs: Fuel is not included in the rental price

Alex
Hey, I'm Alex. I grew up on Anna Maria Island, and these flats and sandbars have been my backyard most of my life. I'm a Marine Corps veteran and PADI Divemaster, and I've spent years living near the water, from Crete to Bali and across Southeast Asia. When I'm not on the boat, I'm usually diving or kiteboarding. I started Suncoast Waterman to share the side of this coast I love most. Reach out anytime. I'm always happy to talk about the water.
