What is an Electric Boat?

Modern boaters are often concerned about the environmental effects of boating and about the community impact their favorite recreational activities may have, and there’s no better way to mitigate those impacts than by running an electric boat. Electric boats don’t create emissions, don’t create lots of engine noise, and they certainly don’t run the risk of spilling fuel or oil into the water.

A number of boat builders have turned their attention to creating purpose-built electric boats in the past few years, and now you can find electric watersports boats, electric fishing boats, and electric cruisers. Some of the major brands being built today include: Bennington, Correct Craft, CraigCat, Duff, ElectraCraft, Greenline, Hinckley, Manitou and SeaArk.

What are the Benefits of Electric Boats?

The environmental benefits of eliminating that gas-burning internal combustion engine from a boat are obvious, but there are actually a number of additional advantages that electric boats enjoy. Maintenance is greatly reduced and reliability is greatly enhanced, because electric motors have far fewer moving parts that need constant attention as compared to gasoline engines. In crowded waterways you’ll never again have to wait in line at the fuel dock, nor will you have to spend money on the operational costs of buying fuel and oil. And gasoline motors have an expected life span of about a decade, while electric motors commonly last twice as long.

As important as all of the above factors may be, many people who have experience with electric boats point to a completely different feature as their favorite perk: peace and quiet. Electric motors are virtually silent, and generally speaking there’s more noise from water splashing against the hull of the boat than there is from the motor. Gas-powered outboards, on the other hand, can create over 90 decibels while running, which is about as much as a loud lawn mower. This can get quite annoying, not only for the people aboard a boat but also for any other people who may be nearby.
